Apple Announces New Klarna and PayPal Integrations for Apple Pay on iOS 18

In June, Apple discontinued its "buy now, pay later" service called Apple Pay Later, which let qualifying customers split a purchase made with Apple Pay into four equal payments over six weeks, with no interest or fees. Instead, Apple said customers in the U.S. would be able to apply for loans from select other "buy now, pay later" services when they check out with Apple Pay on the web and in apps on iOS 18 and iPadOS 18.

Apple Pay Klarna
Affirm payment plans have been available through Apple Pay since last month, and competing service Klarna announced that it is integrating with Apple Pay in the U.S. and the U.K. starting today, and in Canada in the coming months.

iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 users can select "Other Cards & Pay Later Options" when checking out with Apple Pay to access payment plans available from Klarna and Affirm. For example, Klarna offers an interest-free "Pay in 4" payment plan for purchases totaling between $35 and $2,000, which is similar to what Apple Pay Later offered.

Apple also announced an upcoming integration with PayPal.

Starting next year, customers in the U.S. will be able to see their PayPal balance when using their PayPal debit card in the Wallet app on the iPhone, according to Apple.

Reminder: PayPal is a terrible company. There are countless stories of them freezing user funds for things that aren't illegal. There's practically no reason to use them anymore. Also, buy now and pay later services can be predatory... even if it's 0% interest (it isn't).

Avoid Klarna like the plague. I made the mistake of using them once.

As soon as they get your email address they pester you to death with payment reminders (even if it’s all done automatically), direct debit amount reminders, reminders that you have a zero balance, reminders that you have nothing to pay this month and all sorts of other annoying crap.

And they won’t let you opt out of them as they state they are essential (which they aren’t).

If you live in the UK NEVER USE KLARNA.

You wave goodbye to your chargeback and section 75 rights.

That may be the case if you're receiving a lot of money on PayPal, but as a payment service that shouldn't be an issue.

I prefer to use ApplePay, but not everyone offers it and I then often prefer to use PayPal rather than handing out my debit/credit card information on the internet.

Good to know. If this also the same for Paypal ?
If you pay with your Paypal balance they you definitely aren't covered. If Paypal is used as the processor by the merchant you might be covered in some circumstances but it's a grey area and you are better off paying with a credit card if you can for anything over £100
